Interdental brushes hurt or damage gums

Let’s bust the myth that interdental brushes harm your gums. These tiny brushes are designed to clean between your teeth as well as the hard-to-reach areas in your mouth in order to prevent plaque build-up and tooth decay.

Interdental brushes won't hurt or damage your gums if…

  • the brush size is correct.
  • you use high quality brushes with soft bristles and a flexible wire core.
  • the brush is inserted gently, without pressure, and with the right technique.
  • you don't overuse the brushes—in-and-out once a day is enough.

Bleeding?

Some people complain of bleeding gums when they first start brushing with interdentals. This is common and indicates that an inflammation is already present. Cleaning with interdental brushes is the right thing to do, and the bleeding will reduce within the next days of use. When used correctly, interdental brushes help prevent gum disease, inflammation, bad breath, and other dental problems by removing food particles and plaque from around teeth, braces, or implants. If you don’t regularly clean between your teeth, your gums are likely to be unhealthy, filled with plaque, and eventually get inflamed.

Keep on going

When you first clean these areas by using interdental brushes, your gums may feel tender and start to bleed. It’s a sign that there is already an inflammation going on. However, if you continue to use interdental brushes regularly, the bleeding should reduce within a few days and eventually stop. The brushes are safe and won't cause any damage when using the correct size for each interdental space. Make sure you check with your dental professional you are using the proper sizes. You may also bleed if the brush you use is too big—it could hurt your gums. When used correctly and with appropriate interdental brush sizes, these tiny helpers are generally safe and effective and are not likely to cause damage to gums.

How to use interdental brushes?

Using interdental brushes will revolutionise your gum care. This is not an exaggeration, it’s a promise. Learn how you use these tiny brushes properly and get 100% clean teeth.

Interdental spaces—the tiny gaps between your teeth—are ideal hiding spots for bacteria and plaque, where they can grow and infect your gums, often undisturbed since regular toothbrushes can’t reach them. Here’s how to get rid of bacteria and prevent issues.

The procedure is quite easy
Place the brush on the gumline between two teeth and insert it by making small, rotating movements. Push it gently all the way through, then pull it out. That’s all, you’re done. Rinse your brush with water and move on to the next space. At the end of your cleaning routine, wash the brush thoroughly under running water and let it air dry.

Clean your interdental spaces once a day, either before or after brushing. And don’t worry: initial bleeding is normal, it indicates inflammation, which will reduce within the next days. Interdental brushes can typically be used for 1–2 weeks. If the wire bends, simply reposition it and continue using.

Different needs
No two mouths or sets of teeth are the same, they're as unique as fingerprints. Therefore, not all interdental spaces are the same size. That’s why we developed different interdental brush sizes and different holders. Plastic, steel, handy [transl. note: check translation for this holder t+D7single, or double holder – we have a holder for every requirement. Good to know: every brush head fits on every holder and can be reused many, many times.
